Art at St George’s 26th May

I stayed a little late at work yesterday and joined a tour of the hospital that promised art, gardens and music. It was organised by the Arts Team at St George’s.

From Quentin Blake illustrations through to socks – it had everything. I was particularly impressed by the wall and window transfers along by the Jungle ward, lush, engaging and interesting but usingĀ  low-key, calming colours that match the uniforms of staff – all designed to make a stressful time far more bearable and give worried parents and offspring something exciting to talk about.

And yes – there were socks.

Bob, the head gardener gave a mini tour of the grounds, including the fabulous Lambert water garden, now recovering from nearby building work. And there was a chance to hear and chat to three musicians who regularly play for patients.

St George’s isn’t likely to win any architectural awards, being a slightly grim, functional 1970s-style series of blocks – but the art and the brilliant gardening lift it and enhance the mood for staff, students and patients alike. Add to the mix visiting musicians who perform on request for patients – it’s inspiring stuff. This place is special.
